Good Resource

A friend told me about this, and at Catholic Heritage Curricula I found the entire resource for free. It is a great resource to help get you organized in accordance with the faith and striving towards holiness. It is called Simplifying Your Domestic Church...check it out, if you are like me I can ALWAYS use help and suggestions in this department!

Excited

This past weekend I was so excited to get my washer and dryer cleaned up, I know sad that this is all it takes to excite me. But every couple months I like to do a thorough cleaning of these appliances. I have used my two favorite cleaning books for tips: Queen of Clean, and Martha Stewart's Handbook. I just use mild dish washing liquid and water to clean off the exteriors, then wipe with a damp cloth. Then I do a hot wash with 1 quart bleach in the washer, followed by another hot wash with 1 quart white vinegar. At this time I also heat up one cup white vinegar in microwave and pour into fabric softener dispenser and pour some vinegar into the bleach dispenser as well. I love Q-tips to clean out the little spaces!! I have also learned that keeping the lip open after washes helps things dry out faster and cuts down on grime and mildew issues. For the dryer, I spot clean the exterior, vacuum out the lint chute and vents inside and we also need to disconnect the dryer duct hoses and vacuum those out (recommended once a year) to make sure there are no lint build ups. I got really excited because my mother-in-law just sent me THIS which is awesome for treating any kind of stains and lots of other uses found in these books....she used it in Virginia when we were there and I called it the miracle soap....she said her mom always used it too. THANKS MOM!! Happy cleaning!

I love these things...

I just cleaned my microwave...toaster...tool turn about...spice rack...and I used my favorite cleaning item...this!! These work great for those small spaces and vent grids and getting all the dirt and grime out of tracks. I just wet with water and go to town!!

More cleaning...

Ok, so last week I continued with some cleaning...here are more tips I learned:

• mix 2 TBs baking powder with 1 qt. hot water, to clean inside fridge and freezer. This neutralizes all the odors (dish soap's odor may sink into your food). I put it in a spray bottle and worked really well.
• Did you know you are supposed to keep mushrooms in a brown bag with a moist paper towel to keep fresh? It works!!
• I have a white porcelain sink...so I scrub with comet, then fill with hot water and some bleach....I even put the dish drainer and sink strainer in there with it and they came out sparkling clean!!
• Fill a spray bottle with warm water and dish soap to clean outside surfaces of dishwasher, oven, fridge etc.
• Put lemon slices (or juice) in bowl with water and heat in microwave 45 secons or so and everything wipes off really easily to clean and it smells good too!!

Tips and Tricks...

This week I decided to plunge in with starting some deep spring cleaning. I got the Martha Stewart Homekeeping book for Christmas and love it. There are lots of good ideas and tricks. I have cleaned our washer, dryer, utility closet, under sink, oven, stove top, ventilation hood, sink, and media cabinet. Yes, I am also an organizing fool so it felt good to sort things out as well. Some tips I learned:

• to clean ventilation hood filter, soak overnight in warm water with a little dish soap...then scrub. Amazing!!
• to keep wax from sticking to glass holders, put a little water in bottom before you put candle in. Candle wax then slides right out when done. (I love this, I no longer have to put in freezer!!)
• to keep mildew from getting in washing machine, keep lid open for a bit to dry out after wash, and once a month wash empty load with hot water and bleach in dispenser to clean out.
