Lavender for Mamasan

Angel was determined to bring the bundle of lavender we cut to Mamasan after Church on Sunday. She also wanted to put the flowers in all by herself and give Mamasan a kiss goodbye. I know Mamasan was smiling down watching her first great-grandbaby....we miss her so much!

Lavender Festival - Day 1

Today we spent the day up in Sequim, at the Lavender Festival. We look forward to this every year and it holds a special place in our hearts because it was the inspiration for our "lavender wedding" five years ago. We used lavender in all our flower arrangements and bouquets and centerpieces and party favors. It was perfect weather (even a bit chilly with the breezes). Today we went to three of the farms: Angel Farms, Lost Mountain Lavender and Port Williams Lavender. They were all so beautiful. At Angel Farms we enjoyed cutting a big bundle ourselves and tomorrow Angel has decided that we should go put them on Mamasan's grave (they were going to go behind my Mary statue...but how can I refuse such a sweet request...Mamasan would love it after all). At Lost Mountain Lavender we had some refreshing lavender lemonade and listened to some fun music and also found some neat vendors. We enjoyed some DELICIOUS white chocolate chip lavender ice cream at Port Williams Lavender and the fields of lavender and the gardens they had there were BEAUTIFUL!! We made it back to the Street Fair to enjoy some dinner while we listened to the band and did some looking at the vendor stands as well. We had some yummy lavender doughnuts and a fabulous lavender white mocha!! It was a very nice and fun way to celebrate our anniversary and the girls had a blast....although everyone is tired and we better get some sleep because we are going back tomorrow!! (lots of beautiful pics of the farms and girls in slide show!)

Five Fabulous Years

Today is our 5 year wedding anniversary. It is hard to believe we have been married that long!! 3 moves, several jobs, and 2 kids later - here we are. We have experienced so much together, the good and the bad, happy and the sad. Marriage is definetly a journey and vocation that both people have to work (and pray!) hard to make successful. I am so blessed to have Jason as my partner and couldn't think of anyone else I would rather walk and experience the days of my life with....so here's to hopefully many more fabulous years!!

Friday Night Concert

Last night we LOVED listening to Trombanga at the Boardwalk concert. It was a bit chilly, especially down by the water. Good to see you John & Jenny there as well!! Look forward to next Friday's Irish music night! If you would like to hear Trombanga, they will be playing Tuesday night at Liberty Park in Poulsbo at 630pm.

Informed Decisions

I loved Dr. Sears book, The Vaccine Book. He has an alternative and selective schedule for vaccinations. (both of which we will be altering and using for the decisions we have made in regards to all the vaccines) I have written up a summary of some of my notes that I have been taking down while doing this research over the past year. If you want details on what I have found, click HERE. But a few big things I have learned:
1) As parents, we have the responsibility and RIGHT to make the best decisions for our children. We cannot do that if we are uneducated and uninformed. I have come to realize and witness that doctors do not know the answers to the questions when it comes to vaccines. They are trained in how to treat the diseases and that starts by giving the shots. They trust the people that did the research on them, but don't know themselves what the ingredients are or how safe the side effects are. No matter what your decision about vaccination is, I HIGHLY recommend that every parent research and read up on the particulars....learn about what the disease is, what the vaccine is made up of, and what warning signs to look for. I gave two links to my favorite books in my summary page above.
2) One of the main things I learned is this: THERE ARE SOMETIMES SEVERAL VACCINE BRANDS TO CHOOSE FROM. This can make a HUGE difference when giving your child vaccines, especially if you do more than one or two at a time. Some brands do not contain the controversial and harmful things such as high Aluminum levels and animal-human contamination. MOST of the time your doctor will be giving what they have the best supply of or what they are using as a trial or what was the cheapest. Do the research and request the kind you WANT....it is safer all around! (don't use combo shots...in my opinion)
3) If you don't mind an extra trip to the doctor's office between well child checks...space your child's vaccinations out so they are only receiving ONE aluminum containing shot at a time and limiting the number of shots and amount of chemicals being put into the immune system at one time.

Learn as much as you can, be confident in your decisions and remember that any doctor that isn't willing to hear your concerns, discuss them and work out alternative options that satisfy you and protect your children...well you need a new doctor. Dr. Sears website, www.thevaccinebook.com has a neat link that shows vaccine friendly docs for each state that he knows about. www.cogforlife.org also lists updated vaccine info on its site to keep people aware of changes taking place. This has been a long and big decision process for us....but we have learned so much and feel so much more in control about the healthy decisions being made, scares me when I think of how I was at first with Angelica and just took the docs orders and recommendations and trusted that they knew best! I am still looking and hoping that Parenting Instruction Book falls into my lap and gives me all the answers!

Progress

Emma is not only eating rice cereal, but we had made progress with oatmeal and last night my favorite kind of baby yogurt!! She is actually starting to open her mouth some and get a little excited to eat, unlike these pics if you remember. (she liked the pear so slowly maybe she will get used to more and more foods with flavor...it has been an adventure with this one and her foods. I plan to do my first big baby food cooking batch this weekend!)

Tuesday Concert

Well, the Disney Show Tunes night definitely wasn't the best Concert in the Park we have been too. However, any excuse to get outside, have a picnic and enjoy the summer weather is fun for us....thanks John & Jenny for joining us, we love your company...hopefully we will see you at the Friday Boardwalk concert!

Your Own Monastic Bell

Thanks Robin for this article, I loved it!! I so often forget how powerful the daily tasks and chores of our little lives can be if we truly offer the sacrifices up and even try to do them with a smile!!

In His Hands

Click HERE for a moving and reflective tribute to Tony Snow, who lost his battle with cancer last Saturday. He shared so much about his life and struggle with cancer and how his faith that it was all "in God's hands" got him through the hard and easy times. I pray that Tony is now truly in God's hands in Heaven and that his faith and perseverance in the cross and challenges he faced can be an example and testimony to us all.

Special Prayers

I have been waiting until I had more information to pass along, but we are asking everyone to please add to your prayer lists my mother-in-law, Mary Hartsell. A few weeks ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer, infiltrating duct carcinoma. She had found the lump herself and had a biopsy done. The doctor thinks he got the whole thing but the margin of healthy and cancer cells is so small that he will be taking more tissue out. Mom also just got the results of her MRI and it showed two spots, one in each breast. So she will be having more tests done soon to determine if these spots are false positives or cancer. Depending on those results will determine which course of action with the surgery that they will take. When the doctor does the surgery he will also do the tests to see if the lymph nodes have been affected at all. We of course are hoping for the minimal invasive treatment possible, just some more surgery and the cancer meds would be nice....but depending on results she might have to have radiation, chemo, mastectomy...some or all above. Mom sounds very positive and kept telling me that everything is in God's hands and plan. She is a strong woman and I know with all of our prayers and support, she will get through this hard time. We will keep you posted and thank you so much for adding her to your prayers, can never have too many of those!!

Side Note: My friend, Stephers, is doing the Race for the Cure in October in TN. Click on HER SITE if you would like to support with a donation and add a name to run for. I did, so in memory of Mamsan and for Meme and Mary....RUN STEPH RUN!!

Welcome Baby Dominick!!

Way to go Mary, poor thing has been in the hospital since Monday night when her water broke!! Mama and baby are doing well! Thanks for letting me visit and see ya last night, hopefully I was a distraction for you! Can't wait to meet little Dominick!

Marmee's Monkey

Water Fun

On Sunday, Marmee and Poppy bought Angel a new little slide pool. She had lots of fun with Aunt Alli...a little timid climbing up the slide and the water was very cold...but will be lots of fun to cool off in this summer. Also tried the sprinkler but wasn't too sure about running through it! I made my mother-in-law's recipe for Strawberry Pretzel Salad...so yummy! My mom made a Frozen Chocolate Torte for dessert, so yummy and refreshing on a hot day!!

Excited

This past weekend I was so excited to get my washer and dryer cleaned up, I know sad that this is all it takes to excite me. But every couple months I like to do a thorough cleaning of these appliances. I have used my two favorite cleaning books for tips: Queen of Clean, and Martha Stewart's Handbook. I just use mild dish washing liquid and water to clean off the exteriors, then wipe with a damp cloth. Then I do a hot wash with 1 quart bleach in the washer, followed by another hot wash with 1 quart white vinegar. At this time I also heat up one cup white vinegar in microwave and pour into fabric softener dispenser and pour some vinegar into the bleach dispenser as well. I love Q-tips to clean out the little spaces!! I have also learned that keeping the lip open after washes helps things dry out faster and cuts down on grime and mildew issues. For the dryer, I spot clean the exterior, vacuum out the lint chute and vents inside and we also need to disconnect the dryer duct hoses and vacuum those out (recommended once a year) to make sure there are no lint build ups. I got really excited because my mother-in-law just sent me THIS which is awesome for treating any kind of stains and lots of other uses found in these books....she used it in Virginia when we were there and I called it the miracle soap....she said her mom always used it too. THANKS MOM!! Happy cleaning!

One of many reasons

There are many reasons why I love my hubby, but one of them is definitely is mister-fix-it and frugal spending, do-it-myself mentality and talent. We have so far (other than new tires) NEVER taken our cars to get fixed for anything. He has always said that places charge way too much and most of it is for labor costs, so why not just learn how and do it yourself? He has gotten books on our cars and when there is a problem he figures out what it is, shops around for the best part and learns how to do it. While sometimes these things take hours to remedy, he has saved us hundreds of dollars. Last Friday, he drove home and his car sounded like a truck or Harley pulling into the driveway. He thought his exhaust manifold had broken but it ended up being something with the muffler area (note how car savvy I am? I am probably getting all the details wrong!). Anyways, he started driving around to get estimates on parts etc....to only keep getting told that the part was between$100-200 bucks and with labor to fix would cost around $500!! He kept at it and finally found a place where he asked if his car really needed two catalytic converters...the answer was no. So Jason asked them if they would just cut out the bad one and weld a straight pipe on to fix the problem. The shop agreed and $40 bucks later the problem was fixed and he drove home, happy and quietly!! I am so thankful to have him around to fix these issues and determined to do it because I am afraid I would have gotten suckered into the $500 rip off deal!
